Clayton State Day at the Georgia Capitol 2026

(March 22, 2026) - Clayton State University students, faculty, and staff came together for the eagerly awaited Clayton State Day at the Capitol, a special occasion that allowed the Laker community to experience Georgia’s legislative process firsthand, meet state leaders, and highlight the university’s growing influence on higher education and the surrounding region.

Visitors to the Georgia State Capitol took part in a series of activities aimed at deepening their understanding of state government. The group observed proceedings in both the House and Senate Chambers, where they learned how bills are introduced, debated, and voted on. Later, students, faculty, and staff met with local lawmakers for meaningful conversations about civic participation and how individuals can make their voices heard in government.

A standout moment of the event was the formal recognition of Clayton State University by both the Georgia Senate and House of Representatives. Legislators honored the university for its contributions to education and its positive role in the community—a moment of pride for everyone present.

Throughout the day, participants had opportunities to speak with legislators, discuss key issues, and express appreciation for their support of higher education. Students were also connected with alumni working in state government, gaining valuable insight into potential careers in public service.

The legislators that stopped by to speak to Clayton State students included Rep. Josh Bonner, Rep. Demetrius Douglas, Rep. Omari Crawford, Sen. Jaha Howard, Rep. Rhonda Burnough, and Sen. Gail Davenport. Also, alumna and General Assembly staff member Elizabeth Giron-Hernandez spoke to the students.  The group also had an opportunity to meet Governor Brian Kemp and take a group photo with him.

Clayton State Day at the Capitol proved to be an inspiring and educational experience, strengthening the relationship between the university and Georgia’s legislative leaders. It underscored the importance of civic engagement and celebrated the meaningful role Clayton State plays in shaping the state’s future.
