Appointment Announcement: Clayton State University’s New Provost
(December 17, 2024) - It is with great pleasure and excitement that we announce the appointment of Dr. Jill Mizell Drake as the new Provost here at Clayton State University, effective 02/01/2025.
Dr. Drake joins us with over 23 years of higher education experience, seamlessly blending academic excellence with transformational leadership. In her most recent role, she served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Georgia Southwestern State University where she has spearheaded initiatives that enhance student success, academic program innovation, and institutional partnerships. Prior to that role, Dr. Drake served as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of West Georgia, where she advanced strategic priorities such as new degree program development, student retention initiatives, and the implementation of co-curricular maps and innovative instructional practices. Her leadership extended to serving as a department chair, during which she achieved enrollment growth, fostered community partnerships, and strengthened faculty development.

Dr. Drake has earned faculty rank as a tenured, full professor in Mathematics Education. She earned her Doctorate from the University of Georgia, as well as an Education Specialist degree, a Master of Science degree, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Florida State University. A highly accomplished scholar and educator, Dr. Drake has authored eight books, published extensively, and facilitated more than 100 professional development sessions. She has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on over $1.65 million in sponsored projects.
As Provost, Dr. Drake will oversee the university’s academic colleges and programs, faculty development, and various services that support our students, playing a critical role in shaping the future of Clayton State University. We are confident that Dr. Drake's vision and leadership will strengthen our academic mission toward positive social mobility, and continue to foster an environment of innovation, collaboration, and success for both students and faculty.
