What is Kaltura?

Kaltura is the integrated media platform within Brightspace (D2L), designed to support faculty, staff, and students in creating and sharing audio and video content. Media can be embedded directly into Brightspace (D2L) courses, published to websites, or shared securely via direct links.

The platform includes Kaltura Capture, a screen recording tool that allows you to record your screen, webcam, and microphone—individually or in combination.

Instructors can also design interactive video quizzes, with results automatically syncing to the Brightspace (D2L) gradebook and with features like automated captioning, video chapters and more, everyone will benefit from this robust media platform.

Understanding My Media and Media Gallery

Kaltura within Brightspace (D2L) is organized into two main areas "My Media" and "Media Gallery" to help you manage and share your media effectively:

My Media is your personal video library in Kaltura. It stores all the videos you’ve uploaded or recorded, and it stays the same across all your courses.

  • Think of it as your private media workspace.

  • Content in My Media is not visible to students or other users unless you choose to publish it.

  • No matter which course you access it from, your My Media always contains the same videos and links.

Each course in Brightspace (D2L) has its own Media Gallery, a shared space where videos can be published for students and instructors to view.

  • To make a video available in a course, you must publish it from My Media into that course’s Media Gallery.

  • Because each Media Gallery is course-specific, the videos you see will differ based on the course you're in.

  • This allows for tailored content in each class while keeping your full library in one place.

MediaSpace

MediaSpace is a platform where channels are created and used to share videos with faculty, staff, and others. In addition to internal sharing, it can also serve as a public-facing hub, allowing departments to showcase selected videos to the broader campus community and the general public.
