Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
Sigma Sigma Chapter
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Ethel Hedgeman Lyle along with 15 other students broke barriers by forming a sisterhood during a time where little power or authority existed for blacks or women. The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards; to promote unity and friendship among college women; to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women; to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of Service to all Mankind.
Through the years, the vision of Alpha Kappa Alpha has expanded internationally. On April 24, 2005, this dynamic sisterhood was chartered on the campus of Clayton State University. More than 100 years later, Sigma Sigma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has grown and strives to recognize the importance of the individual and the strength of the organization.
Sigma Sigma has hosted many programs on campus and in the community. Several annual events include, Pillowtalk, Memories Matter: Alzheimer’s Walk, and Pretty Intoxicated. Sigma Sigma hosts additional educational, technology, entrepreneur, mentor and awareness workshops and activities throughout the year implement Alpha Kappa Alpha's Launching New Dimensions of Service to all Mankind. One of the last services events that we did as a chapter was a Tree Planting Service partnership with Trees Atlanta (pictured below)
