Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Ethel Hedgeman Lyle along with 15 other students' broke barriers by forming a sisterhood during a time where little power or authority and placement existed for African Americans or women. The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women; to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women; to improve their social stature; to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of Service to all Mankind.

Through the years, the vision of Alpha Kappa Alpha has expanded internationally. On April 24, 2005, this dynamic sisterhood was chartered on the campus of Clayton State University. More than 100 years later, Sigma Sigma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has grown and strives to recognize the importance of the individual and the strength of the organization.

The “Simply Stunning” Sigma Sigma Chapter has hosted many programs on campus and within the community. Several annual events that include Pillow Talk, Memories Matter: Alzheimer’s Walk, and more. Sigma Sigma also hosts additional educational, financial, and inspirational events that bring awareness to all aspects of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s initiative to Serve all Mankind.
