Students enjoy Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

Upcoming events include “¡Baila Conmigo!” Dance with Me – a live performance of a traditional folklore dance, which will be held at the University Center Plaza on Thursday, October 3 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

The “Aprende Conmigo” Graduate School Seminar will be hosted by the Latino Success Initiative (LSI) on Monday, October 7, at Room 260 in the University Center from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Rep your Country Day on Wednesday, October 9, invites all Lakers to wear their country’s favorite traditional attire or athletic gear all day on campus before moving to the Laker Soccer Field for the Men’s Soccer game at 5 p.m.

The month’s festivities will close with the Hispanic Heritage Month Fair on Wednesday, October 16, from 6 -8 p.m. and will include a celebration hosted by the Unidos Living Learning Community complete with Hispanic foods, traditional crafts, and storytelling.

Tuni Acosta, associate director of the university’s Center for Academic Success, has enjoyed the month’s festivities so far.

She’s been additionally excited to highlight the growth of the university’s LSI, which was launched in the 2023-2024 academic year to support and empower Clayton State’s Hispanic and Latino students.

She says the initiative has “gained momentum”, fostering a sense of community and providing valuable resources for academic and personal success.

“Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15, a period chosen to coincide with significant dates in several Latin American countries' histories,” Acosta said. “September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico's Independence Day is celebrated on September 16, and Chile's Independence Day is on September 18. This month-long celebration allows us to honor the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. By recognizing this important time, we not only celebrate independence but also reflect on the ongoing contributions of Hispanic individuals in the U.S. and beyond.”

Asst. Dean of Students Sarah Ray is also ecstatic for the month’s remaining events and says the month provides “an important time to honor and showcase the rich traditions and cultures of Hispanic-speaking countries.”

“This year, the celebrations at Clayton State University will focus not only on these traditions but also on fostering representation and a sense of belonging within our campus community,” Ray said. “Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant cultures of Hispanic countries through various events.”

Ray encourages all Lakers to join in and both witness and enjoy the “beautiful representation of Hispanic culture,” further saying Clayton State University is committed to creating “a welcoming space for all students,” as all students belong on CSU’s campus.

“Hispanic Heritage Month provides a unique opportunity for our community to experience, learn from, and celebrate different cultures,” Ray said. “I encourage everyone to come out, sample new foods, listen to diverse perspectives, and engage with the richness of Hispanic traditions. This month serves as a wonderful community-building experience and sets the tone for the awareness events we have planned for the rest of the year.”
