Clayton State University to Host "Comfort of Recovery" Quilt as Part of Statewide Healing Tour

(January 14, 2025) - Clayton State University is honored to announce its involvement in a special initiative that highlights the transformative power of art in the recovery process. From January 21 to March 10, 2025, the "Comfort of Recovery" quilt, a collaborative project that celebrates addiction recovery through art, will be displayed at the Clayton State University Library as part of a statewide tour.

This quilt, created through a partnership between Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS), the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, and the Rise2Recovery (R2ISE) organization, is a testament to the healing journey of those impacted by addiction and mental health challenges. Over 100 individuals, including R2ISE peers, supporters, museum staff, and Emory University students, contributed to the quilt’s creation, making it a truly community-driven work of art.

The Quilt’s Message: Healing Through Creativity

The quilt is much more than a physical piece of art; it represents the healing power of creativity and community in overcoming addiction. Each stitch and square symbolizes a moment in the journey of recovery—a story of resilience, hope, and healing. The quilt emphasizes that recovery is an ongoing, creative process and showcases the diverse ways art can serve as a path to healing. From spoken word to dance to sewing, these art forms have helped those in recovery express their struggles and triumphs.

Clayton State’s Role in the Healing Tour

As a key stop on the quilt’s tour, Clayton State University is proud to provide a space for the community to engage with this moving and meaningful art project. The quilt’s display aligns with Clayton State’s mission to foster an inclusive and empathetic environment for students, faculty, and the broader community.

Dr. Sonya S. Gaither, Dean of Libraries at Clayton State University, expressed excitement about the quilt’s arrival: "Hosting the 'Comfort of Recovery' quilt at Clayton State University offers a unique opportunity for our campus and the greater Morrow community to experience the profound impact of recovery through art. This project emphasizes the importance of supporting individuals in their recovery journey and opens the door for deeper discussions around mental health and addiction."
