Pioneering the Future of Dental Hygiene: Students Among First in Georgia Certified in Laser Therapy
(April 15, 2025) - In a groundbreaking step for the dental hygiene profession, two senior Clayton State University Dental Hygiene students have become part of the first group of dental hygienists in Georgia to achieve certification in laser therapy—positioning themselves at the forefront of innovation and advanced patient care.
Their achievement comes in response to a recent expansion of the dental hygiene scope of practice in Georgia. Under Rule 150-5-.08 established by the Georgia Board of Dentistry, registered dental hygienists are now permitted to use dental diode lasers—a major advancement in the tools available for non-invasive periodontal care.
Laser therapy has become a game-changer in dental hygiene, offering powerful benefits like reduced discomfort, faster healing, and enhanced bacterial control. Used under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist, this technology allows hygienists to perform bacterial reduction and sulcus disinfection, improving patient outcomes without the need for more invasive procedures.
By earning their certification ahead of graduation, these trailblazing students are not only embracing cutting-edge techniques—they’re shaping the future of dental care in Georgia. Their success reflects both their commitment to clinical excellence and the forward-thinking spirit of Clayton State’s Dental Hygiene program.
“This isn’t just a personal milestone,” said Department Chair of Dental Hygiene, Dr. Naquilla Thomas. “It’s a sign of where the profession is going—and our students are leading the way.”
As the role of dental hygienists continues to evolve, this moment represents a pivotal step forward in bringing advanced, patient-centered care to more communities across the state.
Congratulations to our future graduates for this remarkable accomplishment—and for setting the bar high for those who will follow.
