Dr. Sean Vogt awarded inaugural grant
(January 17, 2024) - Dr. Sean Vogt, Clayton State University’s director of choral activities and conductor of the Spivey Hall Masterworks Chorus, was recently awarded the inaugural Raymond Glover Grant for Episcopal Liturgical Music.
The grant was created as a means to honor the six-year anniversary of the death of Dr. Raymond Glover – the co-founder of the Association of Anglican Musicians (AAM) and one of the general editors of the Episcopal Hymnal.
According to the Dept. of Film, Communication, and Performing Arts, Dr. Vogt will use the funds to study liturgical improvisation with international concert organist and composer, Dr. George Baker, and Mr. Robert McCormick – a musical improviser under professional concert management with Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists.
In addition to the mentorship, he will create a multimedia improvisation process tutorial with Dr. Baker and Mr. McCormick, which will later become an available resource to all musicians through the AAM’s website.
“It’s an honor to receive any grant,” Vogt said. “But when it’s the inaugural grant named after the organization’s co-founder, the honor is all the more special. It’s also encouraging to see Clayton State in print on a national level.”
Prof. Jonathan Harris, a colleague of Vogt’s in the Dept. of Film, Communication, and Performing Arts, was ecstatic for Vogt’s recognition, saying his accomplishment will be felt by countless classes of Lakers musicians in the years to come.
"Dr. Vogt was selected through a competitive process open to musicians from across the nation,” Harris said. “It shows the depth of his musical experience and commitment to improvisation that he was picked as the inaugural recipient of the award. Our students will benefit so much from this study as he shares the results of his study with them."
