University Tree Committee prepares for annual Arbor Day Celebration

(April 9, 2024) - With spring now fully upon us, the Clayton State University Tree Committee is ready to help Morrow’s campus get even greener and is inviting all Lakers to take part.

The 2024 Arbor Day Observance will take place at the Judge Eugene Lawson Amphitheater at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

Jessie McClellan from the Georgia Arborist Association and Clayton State University President Georj L. Lewis are currently scheduled to be the event’s keynote speakers and brief informative service on proper tree care will also be given.

As has been done in years’ past, the committee will plant trees on the campus grounds and is encouraging all attendees and students to participate.

Two trees will be planted this year – the main tree being a lacebark elm, the secondary tree being a downy serviceberry.

The elm will be planted on the island end of the Clayton Hall parking lot across from the student pick-up/drop-off area while the serviceberry will be planted along the walking path behind Spivey Hall.

Refreshments will also be served at the amphitheater following the tree plantings.

Michael Perkins, assistant director of Clayton State University’s landscape management team, is eager for the event’s annual return and hopes to see another large group of Lakers getting their thumbs green this year.

“We encourage attendance to learn about trees, proper care, and about our involvement in being a Tree Campus USA member,” Perkins said. “Also, they can get a little dirty helping plant the trees. By planting a tree, we will provide shade to relax in, shelter for wildlife, and beauty for years of enjoyment.”
