Master of Arts in Teaching Program Regulations

Academic Requirements

Students must complete all Professional Studies and Concentration courses with a grade of “B" or higher to continue with the cohort. Student Teaching/Internship courses must be completed with a “B” or higher.

Each student is advised by a committee consisting of faculty from the Concentration Area and faculty from the Department of Teacher Education. Exit requirements for this program are:

  • Completion of all program coursework with a grade point average of no less than 3.00.
  • Successful completion of all student teaching/internship courses with a grade of "B" or higher.
  • Successful completion and presentation of a culminating portfolio.

Students who withdraw from the program for particular reasons may have to reapply in order to return.

Field Placements

Practicum and student teaching placements for all M.A.T programs are managed by Dr. Rosetta Riddle in the Department of Teacher Education.

In order to participate, or even be placed, in the field experiences portion of the program, students must:

  • complete an application for field placement by the appropriate deadline,
  • receive faculty approval
  • pass both GACE content courses for their content area, and 
  • fulfill all prerequisite courses as outlined in their course of study.

Provisionally licensed teachers accepted into the M.A.T. degree program may use their current teaching position at their school to fulfill their field experience. A Clayton Sta t e university supervisor will be assigned by the Office of Field Placements and Education department administration.

Provisional teachers must be teaching in the content and age level for which they are earning certification.

Practicum/Internship Experiences

Overall, candidates spend approximately 900 hours in their field experience setting(s). During this time teacher candidates will follow the assigned school’s calendar for holidays and vacation times.

M.A.T. Practicum I   Practicum experiences (14 weeks) in the assigned school will require daily participation in the first two weeks of the semester and two full days per week thereafter. Here, the teacher candidate  will learn about the day-to-day experiences of planning and teaching in classrooms.

M.A.T. Internship Internship experiences are designed to resemble the actual responsibilities that teaching requires. Here, the teacher candidate will partake of the day-to-day experiences of planning and teaching in classrooms. During January of the internship, the student teacher will function as an “assistant or co-teacher” with guidance from the assigned mentor teacher at the school. Six weeks of full-time teaching responsibilities should begin in February. At the end of that six weeks, the student teacher will once again function as an “assistant or co-teacher”  until the semester concludes.

Program Withdrawal/Removal

A student may be removed from the M.A.T. program for the following reasons:

  • Two or more C’s in coursework
  • Failing education coursework
  • Inappropriate personal and/or professional behavior
  • Failing to satisfy Dispositions Procedures (link to teacher ed page with the Dispositions info)

A student may also voluntarily withdraw from the program. Reasons for withdrawal will vary and must be discussed with your Concentration Area Coordinator and the M.A.T. Director prior to withdrawal.

Program Reenrollment/Readmission

Reenrollment

If a student voluntarily withdraws from the program, for a reason cleared through their concentration area coordinator and the MAT Director and has not been out for more than two semesters they may apply to be reenrolled. Application does not guarantee acceptance.

Those seeking Reenrollment should:

  • Contact the appropriate Concentration Area Coordinator to find out what deficiencies needs to be addressed in order for you to return.
  • Send a notification e-mail to the office of Graduate School Admissions.
  • Write a detailed letter to the Professional Education Programs Committee (PEPC) stating your case.
  • What happened, why you withdrew (or were removed), and what has changed that you feel you may be ready to return.
  • Submit a dispositions form completed by a professor who taught a class of yours during your time in the MAT program. The form must be placed in a CSU envelope, sealed, and signed over the seal.
  • Complete a  Program Reenrollment Request Form  and attach to your letter as a cover sheet.
  • Submit the reenrollment packet (#’s 2(copy), 3, 4 & 5) to the M.A.T. Director in the office of Teacher Education (Arts and Sciences Bldg. G-205).
  • Student will be notified of the PEPC decision by the appropriate Concentration Area Coordinator

Readmission

A student who has been removed from the M.A.T. Program for any reason, or has withdrawn for more than two semesters, must apply for readmission. Application does not guarantee acceptance.

A student must apply for readmission to both the graduate school and the teacher education program. Those seeking re-admission, should:

  • Contact the appropriate Concentration Area Coordinator to find out what deficiencies needs to be addressed in order for you to return.
  • Send an inquiry e-mail stating your intentions to the office of Graduate School Admissions.
  • Reapply to the School of Graduate Studies (There is a readmission application fee of 25$)
  • Write a detailed letter to the Professional Education Programs Committee (PEPC) stating your case
  • What happened, why you withdrew (or were removed), and what has changed that you feel you may be ready to return.
  • Submit a dispositions form completed by a professor who taught a class of yours during your time in the MAT program. The form must be placed in a CSU envelope, sealed, and signed over the seal.
  • Complete a  Program Readmission Request Form  and attach to your letter as a cover sheet.
  • Submit the reapplication packet (#’s 2(copy), 4, 5 & 6) to the M.A.T. Director in the office of Teacher Education (Arts and Sciences Bldg. G-205).
  • *Student will be notified of the PEPC decision by the appropriate Concentration Area Coordinator

*If PEPC decides to re-admit someone who has been previously removed from the program, the Concentration area Coordinator and M.A.T. Director will have a meeting to discuss prior disposition reports with the student. At that time a plan will be created to which the student must adhere to remain in the program.
