Screenings

The School of Nursing at Clayton State University contracts with several clinical agencies for nursing clinical experiences within the Greater Atlanta area. Increasingly clinical facilities are requiring criminal background checks and drug screenings for all students involved in direct patient care.

Each clinical experience is required by the Georgia Board of Nursing for program completion; consequently, all students must complete both a background check and drug screen through the approved vendor Advantage Students. Students are responsible for the associated background and drug screen expenses.

Results from the background and drug screens are made available to the respective clinical facilities; faculty and staff of the School of Nursing are not provided the results. Based upon the results, the clinical facility will determine if a student is eligible for clinical placement.

If a student is denied the opportunity to participate in the clinical experience due to a less than satisfactory background check or drug screen, the student will not be allowed to participate or continue in the nursing program at Clayton State University.

Students who withdraw and/or are dismissed from the School of Nursing during an academic semester are required to complete another background check and drug screen prior to returning the subsequent semester.

Schedule

  • Flexibility in schedule is essential; as the School of Nursing does not guarantee specific days or times for classes nor placement in preferred clinical sites.
  • Schedule varies each semester but typically requires attendance four days per week; twelve-hour clinical shifts, nights, and weekends may be required.
  • Plan work around school, not vice-versa; a full-time workload along with family responsibilities is difficult to manage and is never recommended.
  • Build extensive study time into schedule; expect to spend approximately 9-12 hours per week on each 3-credit hour course.

Clinicals

  • Appropriate behavior, dress, and equipment at clinical experiences.
  • Responsibility of student to arrange reliable transportation to and from clinical sites within 90 miles radius of campus.
  • Attendance is mandatory for all clinical assignments.
  • Valid social security number required at clinical sites and to obtain professional licensure.
