First-Year Students

New Student Programs at Clayton State University are designed to ensure a smooth and engaging transition for new students as they begin their academic journey. This initiative provides a foundation for success through a variety of resources, events, and personalized support tailored to new students.

From orientation through the first year, New Student Programs focus on fostering connections, building essential academic and life skills, and helping students acclimate to campus life.

First Year Seminar - CSU 1000

 The CSU 1000 First Year Seminar course is designed to introduce new students to the academic, social, and cultural community at Clayton State University. To help students adjust to college life and ensure their success, first-time traditional students enrolling in 9 or more semester hours are strongly encouraged to enroll in CSU 1000 First Year Seminar. It is recommended that students take this course during the Fall semester.

Alpha Lambda Delta

Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first-year students. To be eligible for membership at Clayton State University, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a first-year student (full-time or part-time) at Clayton State University.
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher after completing their first semester.
  • Be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at the university.
  • Maintain good academic standing with the institution.

Membership in Alpha Lambda Delta provides students with leadership opportunities, scholarships, networking events, and community service involvement. For more information, contact Ms. Erica Taylor at NewStudentPrograms@clayton.edu.

The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is an integral component of the reaffirmation of accreditation process and is derived from an institution’s ongoing comprehensive planning and evaluation processes. It reflects and affirms a commitment to enhance overall institutional quality and effectiveness by focusing on an issue the institution considers important to improving student learning outcomes and/or student success.

The Bridge Program

Students are invited to attend the program during the fall or summer to help them prepare for the following term. During the program, students will connect with support services and earn at least six college credits.

Some highlights of the program include:

  • Introduction to key faculty and staff
  • Optional residential living-learning community (LLC)
  • Tailored guidance and support from the Center for Academic Success, Center for Advisement and Retention, Financial Aid, Student Life, and more, including:
    • Learning style assessments
    • Personalized study skills
    • Academic skills workshops
    • Leadership development
    • Social and networking opportunities

Admissions and Enrollment

Q: How can I check my admission status?

A: Log in to your Duck Portal account using the credentials provided after you applied.

Q: What should I do after being accepted?

A: Complete the following steps:

  • Submit your Enrollment Confirmation.
  • Complete the FAFSA for financial aid.
  • Sign up for New Student Orientation.
  • Submit proof of immunizations.

Q: Is Orientation Mandatory for all students?

A: Orientation is mandatory for all incoming students, except for those enrolled exclusively in online degree or certificate programs. All other students are required to attend.

Q: What is the Orientation Fee?

A: an $100 non-refundable Orientation fee. The Orientation fee cannot be waived.

Financial Aid and Tuition

Q: How do I apply for financial aid?

A: Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at studentaid.gov. Clayton State’s school code is 008976.

Q: When is tuition due

A: Tuition deadlines vary by semester. Check the Bursar’s Office webpage for specific dates.

Q: Does the university offer payment plans?

A: Yes, payment plans are available through the Student Accounts Office.

Housing and Campus Life

Q: Is on-campus housing available?

A: Yes, Laker Hall and Laker Village offer on-campus housing. Apply early as space is limited.

Q: What should I bring if I’m living on campus?

Q: Are meal plans required

A: Meal plans are required for students living in Laker Hall and optional for others. Various plans are available to fit your needs.

Q: How do I register for classes?

A: You can register for classes through the DUCK portal after meeting with your academic advisor.

Q: Where can I find my class schedule?

A: Your class schedule is available in your DUCK portal.

Q: Are tutoring services available?

A: Yes, the Center for Academic Success provides free tutoring services for various subjects.

Student Resources

Q: Where can I get my Laker Card (student ID)?

A: Visit the Laker Card Center in Edgewater Hall-2nd floor to get your ID.

Q: Is there a campus shuttle service?

A: No, Clayton State does not provide transportation across campus or nearby locations.

Q: What health services are available?

A: Atrium Health offers basic medical care, immunizations, and wellness resources.
