Campus Security Authorities

It is important to understand that a victim of a crime may be more inclined to report the crime to someone other than law enforcement. The Clery Act requires all institutions to collect crime reports from a variety of individuals and organizations that are considered by the Act to be “Campus Security Authorities. ”The Clery Act defines FOUR categories of Campus Security Authorities:

  1. Campus Police & Security Personnel
  2. Individuals responsible for safety but are not campus police or security, student escorts, student security, parking monitors.
  3. Officials of institutions who have “significant responsibility for student campus activities”, e.g. Coaches, Trip Advisors.
  4. Individuals designated under school policy as individuals to whom to report crimes, e.g. Judicial Affairs, Dean of Students.

A Campus Security Authority (CSA) is not responsible for determining whether a crime took place. That is the function of law enforcement.

If you are not sure whether the crime needs to be reported, share the information with Public Safety anyway.
