Campus Security Authorities
It is important to understand that a victim of a crime may be more inclined to report the crime to someone other than law enforcement. The Clery Act requires all institutions to collect crime reports from a variety of individuals and organizations that are considered by the Act to be “Campus Security Authorities. ”The Clery Act defines FOUR categories of Campus Security Authorities:
- Campus Police & Security Personnel
- Individuals responsible for safety but are not campus police or security, student escorts, student security, parking monitors.
- Officials of institutions who have “significant responsibility for student campus activities”, e.g. Coaches, Trip Advisors.
- Individuals designated under school policy as individuals to whom to report crimes, e.g. Judicial Affairs, Dean of Students.
A Campus Security Authority (CSA) is not responsible for determining whether a crime took place. That is the function of law enforcement.
If you are not sure whether the crime needs to be reported, share the information with Public Safety anyway.
