Federal Grants

A grant is a form of financial aid that does not have to be repaid.  The type of federal grants available are Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Opportunity Grants (TEACH) Grants, and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants.

Pell Grant

The U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula to evaluate Pell Grant eligibility by the information a student supplies on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This formula produces an EFC (expected family contribution) number, which will determine if the student is eligible for the grant. Applicants must be undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

A Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is different from other federal student grants because it requires you to agree to complete a teaching service obligation as a condition for receiving the grant, and if you don't complete the service obligation, the TEACH Grant will be converted to a loan that you must repay, with interest.

TEACH Grant Eligibility Criteria

  • Meet the basic eligibility criteria for the federal student aid programs
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA®) form
  • Enroll as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student at a school that participates in the TEACH Grant Program
  • Enroll in a TEACH-Grant-eligible program
  • Meet certain academic achievement requirements (scoring above the 75th percentile on one or more portions of a college admissions test or maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25)
  • For specific information about the academic requirements, talk to the Financial Aid Office
  • Receive TEACH Grant counseling that explains the terms and conditions of the TEACH Grant service obligation. You must complete counseling each year that you receive a TEACH Grant.
  • Sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve or Repay

TEACH Grant Information

The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete course work needed to begin a career in teaching.

As required by the Budget Control Act of 2011 (the sequester law), any TEACH Grant where the first disbursement is on or after October 1, 2021, and before October 1, 2022, requires a reduction of 5.7 percent from the award amount for which the student would otherwise have been eligible.
