CLEP

New: Free CLEP courses are available online--and scholarships for CLEP tests & fees!

The same CLEP exam may be repeated in three months.

A series of free online courses for CLEP test prep is now available through the Modern States Education Alliance. The courses are taught by college professors and delivered online via the Modern States website. All the courses are free, as are any required textbooks and other materials. See the following website: https://modernstates.org/freshman-year-free/. Key contact is Whitney Macdonald who can be reached at WHITNEY@MODERN STATES.ORG.

Students may also receive scholarships for CLEP tests and fees. For additional information see the following Modern States websites: Modernsates.org.

After completing the Modern States course (listening to lectures and taking practice tests), participants email Info@ModernStates.org for a payment voucher. Students can then register online for a free CLEP test.

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows students to earn credit for college courses by passing national exams. We encourage you to view this short video to hear the main points of this program. View the Video.

Clayton State University is a fully funded CLEP Site for active military members! Call us at (678) 466-4495 to register locally for a testing session if you are active military (currently serving in the military at a base full time).

You must now register and pay online in two places before testing:

  1. To register for CLEP testing with the CollegeBoard, create and manage your personal account through the http://clep.collegeboard.org/register/exam registration portal. The CLEP registration fee payment of $95 to CollegeBoard is good for 6 months. When registering for CLEP testing, be sure that you register with the exact same name as is shown on the Government Issued ID that you will present at the testing center upon arrival for testing, or you will not be allowed to test under CollegeBoard rules. Please note these College Board policies: CLEP exams will be refundable up to seven days from the date of purchase, with the exception of redeemed exams. Study guides that are in new, unused, and resalable condition will be refundable within 30 days of the order date with a copy of the packing slip. Once you register with the CollegeBoard, make sure to print your registration ticket to present to the Testing Center on your test day. Make your Clayton State reservation and pay the $25 registration fee at least a week ahead of time to ensure seating. Scroll to the bottom of this screen for our list of upcoming CLEP sessions, and see #2 below for choices of how to register and pay this registration fee to Clayton State. See this CollegeBoard site for more complete information about the CLEP registration and testing process: http://clep.collegeboard.org/register/exam.
  2. To register for a testing session at Clayton State, pay Clayton State the nonrefundable registration fee of $25 by credit or debit card at the following site at least a week in advance of the test: Testing Center Store
  3. Students who wish to change their testing session appointments must register and pay the $25 registration fee again to Clayton State. Due to many cancellations and no-shows, we will not roll registrations from one session to the next.

The Testing Center's street address is 5823 Trammell Road, Morrow, GA 30260. View the map. We are located in Arbor Hall, Room 121.

The total advanced testing fee is $120 for each exam, which includes the non-refundable registration fee of $25 payable to Clayton State University and the non-refundable registration fee of $95 payable to the CollegeBoard. This CLEP publication has additional information: http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/pdf/clep/infocand.pdf. Scoring information is here: http://clep.collegeboard.org/about/score.

A current, valid, government-issued ID with the test taker's full name in English language characters displaying both a photo and a signature is required for CLEP test admittance. School IDs are not government-issued IDs and cannot be used for test admittance.

Follow the CLEP program suggestions for study materials, and feel free to explore other options such as: www.InstantCert.com, www.saylor.org, and http://ocw.mit.edu/ for additional study materials.

Clayton State University's Testing Center is an open CLEP test center, testing students for any school. We offer all CLEP tests twice a month except for December.

Be certain to talk with your Registrar (if from another school) or academic advisor (if from Clayton State) prior to CLEP registration so that you will sign up for appropriate tests. The essay portion of the College Composition exam is evaluated by two college English professors from a nationwide pool from CLEP, and this evaluation period may take from two to five weeks before results are received. View the scoring information. Each essay is scored using a holistic scoring method. Make certain to factor in this additional required time when registering for classes.

CLEP credit is not awarded to Clayton State University students who have previously earned credit or for those who have already completed a higher course in sequence. For example, a student with credit for MATH 1113 could not earn CLEP credit for MATH 1111. For more complete information, view the catalog under Academic Policies.

*Effective for the 2013-2014 catalog and beyond, Principles of Marketing and Principles of Management CLEP exams will count at Clayton State University for all programs, including the College of Business BBA degree, as acceptable for MKTG 3101 and MGMT 3101, respectively. The Introductory Business Law CLEP exam will no longer be accepted for any program. The Management and Marketing CLEPS will count for the BBA degree as long as the BBA student is using the 2013-2014 catalog requirements, no matter when the CLEP test was taken. Students should discuss all CLEP decisions with their advisors before registering for exams.

CLEP tests are computerized with passing scores for most subjects set at 50. Check with your school or department advisor to verify which CLEP tests count as equivalent for courses and the score requirement.

The second year of foreign language tests (6 semester hours) will be awarded with a score of 59 for French, 63 for German, and 63 for Spanish at most schools.

We do not give credit for the Spanish with Writing Exam.

Register and pay at least one week in advance to ensure seating!
